Optical Terms
A/R |
Anti reflective treatment for lens surface to decrease reflection and glare |
Acrylic |
Light and cost effective organic material for both concave and convex lenses |
ADC Resin |
Allyl Diglycol Carbonate Resin for optical use. Also known as diethylene glycol bis-(allyl carbonate) |
Allyl Diglycol Carbonate Resin |
Plastic Resin that is often harder and more scratch resistant than many other commonly utilized organic optical lens substrates |
Anti Fog Coated |
Treatment for lens surface to try and maintain optical clarity. Can be applied to mineral glass lens and also to organic lens |
Anti Fog Solution |
Applied to optical surface to try and maintain optical clarity |
Anti Fog Wipe |
Applied to optical surface to try and maintain optical clarity |
Bifocal |
Lens with two segments: usually the larger segment for short sightedness and the smaller segment for long sightedness |
CR-39 |
Allyl Diglycol Carbonate |
DemoLens |
PlanoLens, ZeroLens or zero diopter lens, with no correction for short sightedness or long sightedness |
Hard Coated |
Treatment for surface of ophthalmic medium to increase resistance to scratching |
High Index |
Optic material with refractive index higher than that of Crown Glass, or >1.5 High index lenses have the advantage of being thinner and lighter |
Mirror |
Lens with surface metallic elements to reflect light, allowing a cooler and more relaxed environment for the eye |
Multi Coat |
Anti reflective treatment for optical surface to decrease reflection and glare |
Photochromic |
Both mineral glass and organic lenses can be infused with halogen compounds which increase the tint of the lenses. The higher the duration and intensity of sunlight or ultraviolet light, the darker the tint |
Polarized |
Polarization of light reduces glare. A thin polarizing layer sandwiched between two lenses cuts down light reflected in the horizontal plane |
Polycarbonate |
Molded lens with higher impact resistance. PC has higher index and lighter weight than Crown Glass |
Progressive |
Progressive lenses avoid unsightly transition lines between segments of lenses. Technologically superior, they are a must for the modern, latest fashion conscious, eyeglasses wearer |
Quadrifocal |
Quadrifocal or Double Bifocal lenses are often used in occupations such as aviation and dentistry when near vision correction is frequently required both above and below the usual level of the eyes |
Smart Photochromic |
Allows personal control of the percentage of light transmitted through the lens, and subsequently through the cornea and iris on to the retina |
Tinted |
Both mineral glass and organic lenses can be made in just about any shade of any color |
Trifocal |
Lens with three segments - - normally for short distance, mid distance and far-off distances |
Ultraviolet |
Some medical experts advise that general purpose eyewear should have at least 95 percent reduction of UVB radiation (290 - 315 nm) and 60 percent reduction of UVA radiation (315 - 380 nm). Many lenses do not met these levels of reduction for UVA radiation and UVB radiation. UVC light is not normally of concern as most solar UVC is filtered out by the earth's atmosphere. Where UV reduction is important, it is better to use specially coated lenses that achieve 99% reduction of UVA radiation and 99% reduction of UVB radiation |
